How to Balance Relationships
Are You Struggling with Balance in Your Relationship? Don’t Panic
Balance in relationships means respecting one another’s needs and desires while respecting independence and setting boundaries.
Commitment
Commitment refers to our willingness to invest time, resources and energy into something you believe in – such as keeping relationships alive over the long term or giving our best – with respect, honesty and cooperation as central principles, working towards creating the common good of any relationship we share.
Commitments have long been used as an invaluable means for both individual and collective action, both within business and personal relationships. Commitments enable individuals to create and stabilize expectations about their actions while protecting them against fluctuations in desires and interests (Michael and Pacherie, 2014).
Commitments have also proven their worth as powerful means of encouraging cooperation, convincing individuals to join collective activities they wouldn’t normally support and providing companies with a way to remain competitive during turbulent economic conditions while assuaging nervous customers of new products and technologies. Commitments may help companies stay ahead of competition or convince hesitant customers to adopt them more easily.
Independence
Finding a balance between independence and togetherness in relationships requires open communication and flexibility to achieve.
An appropriate balance between independence and togetherness enables couples to have their own space, pursue individual interests, and grow as individuals while at the same time maintaining strong ties to one another.
If you find yourself feeling pressured into changing who you are in order to fit someone else’s idea of who they want you to be, chances are you may not be independent enough.
As you explore what you desire and require from a relationship, remain true to yourself at all times – this may prove challenging at times but will ensure your own wellbeing and that of any potential partners.
Communication
Communication refers to the exchange of information between two people using verbal and nonverbal methods.
Communication takes many forms, from signs and symbols to colors, touches, body movements and facial expressions – as well as both verbal and nonverbal tones of voice.
Communication in any relationship is crucial to creating a healthy balance between independence and dependence on each other. If one partner cannot express his/her desires, fears, ambitions or hardships appropriately to their partner, it could have adverse repercussions for their partnership.
Communication typically occurs as two-way process that involves one party formulating and sending out information for another to interpret, however one-way processes also exist when information is conveyed without receiving feedback from its recipient.
Respect
Respect is an attitude or action that shows you are capable of acknowledging the worth and worth of others, which is essential in creating strong bonds between partners.
Respect is also key in workplace relationships, with studies showing that employees who feel valued at work tend to be more engaged and perform better overall.
Respectful behaviors should be the norm in every workplace, no matter their individual preferences or feelings. A respectable attitude can reduce stress levels for employees while improving mental wellbeing and providing them with more opportunities to advance in their careers.
Limiting Dependence
Relationships require much from both partners; we depend on them for support and guidance in trying times.
However, overreliance can be unhealthy; therefore it is best to limit how dependent you are on your partner and take responsibility for making decisions yourself.
Interdependent relationships can be very rewarding because they foster feelings of trust between partners. While it is normal for two people to rely on each other in this manner, however it can become troublesome when one becomes over-dependent on another person.
Emotional dependency can be challenging to break free of when in a long-term relationship, but there are ways of dealing with and improving it over time. Just be patient as the process may take several attempts.
